The Allegan County Food Pantry will close its doors Oct. 2, ending a longtime source of assistance for families facing food insecurity throughout the county.
The pantry, commonly known as ACFP, operates from the lower level of the First Church of God at 1313 Lincoln Road in Allegan. It currently distributes groceries on Tuesdays and Fridays and allows qualifying households to receive assistance once each month.
Founded by the Allegan Ministerium in 1991, the nonprofit has operated under several names and from different locations during its 35 years of service. In addition to groceries, the organization has offered baby formula, diapers and other necessities through its Bridging Babies program.
A reason for the closure had not been publicly provided as of press time. Additional information is also expected regarding the disposition of remaining food, financial donations and other pantry supplies.
Residents who need food assistance after the closure may contact Hands of Grace Food Pantry at Allegan United Methodist Church, 409 Trowbridge St., or one of the other organizations belonging to the Allegan County Food Pantry Collaborative. Information about available food programs may also be obtained by calling 211.
