BATTLE CREEK — Three Rivers’ boys’ tennis team had another close match early on in their season, losing on the road at Harper Creek 5-3.
Two of the three Wildcat victories came in the singles realm. At No. 2 singles, Carter Fuller defeated Quinten Valenzuela 2-6, 6-4, 10-5, and at No. 3 singles, Nick Karabetsos defeated Charlie Cotts 6-2, 6-0. In No. 1 doubles, Collin McIntyre/Todd Wadsworth for the Wildcats defeated the Beavers’ Camden Graham/Owen Goodwin 7-6 (10), 6-3.
Three Rivers played on Wednesday against Otsego. Those results will be in next week’s edition.
Sturgis swept at home; seventh at Great 8
STURGIS — The Sturgis boys hosted a quad tennis meet at Augspurger Courts last Saturday, and faced two teams that placed in the top five in last year’s state meet. The Trojans lost to Detroit Country Day, who took second in the state last season, 8-0, then went on to lose to Chelsea, who placed fifth at the 2026 state meet, by the same 8-0 score.
“The Trojans are learning resilience and looking for opportunities, despite the circumstances,” stated Sturgis coach George Earl. He went on to say that “Additionally, they are working on taking risks and working on a positive mentality for the rest of the year.”
Earlier, the Trojans hosted the Great 8 Tournament, which featured a past state champion (Cranbrook) and three other top-ten schools from last season. Cranbrook placed first, while Sturgis landed in seventh-place.
“While the competition was very difficult, the Trojans learned what it will take to improve by identifying some strengths and weaknesses,” commented coach George Earl. “Myself, along with coaches VanDosen, Donmyer and Barfield are proud of the character the boys showed.”
