Citywide brush collection schedule set in Sturgis

Brush pickup in the city of Sturgis begins Oct. 5.

Crews from Department of Public Services will begin the collection process on the north side of the city and work southward.

Only one pass will be made through the city.

The service is separate from leaf collection, which typically begins later in October.

Weather conditions and varying amounts of brush make it difficult to adhere to a strict schedule, so officials suggest that residents have your material ready for pickup and crews will get to them as quickly as possible.

Rules for the collection service:

  • Brush must be neatly stacked on the terrace clear of all obstructions such as power poles, guy wires, signposts, valve boxes, fire hydrants and similar items. If material is not properly placed, it will not be collected.
  • Maximum length of 8 feet and diameter of 4 inches for any branches and limbs.
  • Not accepted: grass clippings, roots, thorn-bearing branches, tree trunks, stumps and construction
  • Limit of one truck load of material per parcel.

The city currently provides brush pickup to its residents twice each year, starting the first full week of April and October.

Residents unable to participate in the curbside collection may take brush to the compost site on Fawn River Road. Hours for the site:

Through October:
Tuesday: Noon-7:30 p.m.
Thursday: Noon-7:30 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Sunday: 1-5 p.m.
November
Tuesday: Noon-6 p.m.
Thursday: Noon-6 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The compost site closes for the season at 6 p.m. Nov. 24.
