At the last regular meeting of the Clare County Board of Commissioners, it was noted that the Clare County Airport will be seeking a budget increase of $15,500 during budget talks that will take place on September 16th at the County Building. The airport has been addressed in several meetings of local townships with a mixed support apparent.
It was noted at the last Greenwood Township meeting by Greenwood Township Trustee Gail Garrity that if for some reason the airport would lose county funding and close, it would be a loss for the entirety of the county.
“Once it’s gone, it’s gone,” she said.
Clare County Commissioner David Hoefling, who represents Winterfield, Summerfield, Frost, and part of Franklin Townships, believes in the airport as well, hoping that not only does the county fund the airport but that grants can be successfully written to support other purchases or construction needs.
“ It will be interesting to see how the request is received,” he said, “We have a unique airport, we are only one of a handful of smaller airports in the state with a restaurant so close and the airport does bring in tourism.”
The public hearing on the upcoming budget will take place on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 9 a.m.
