VAN BUREN COUNTY – Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott reported that since Wednesday, Aug. 5, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office has investigated three separate incidents involving the intentional damage of telecommunications utility pedestals, primarily in the northeastern portion of Van Buren County.
Sheriff Abbott said, “These utility pedestals are critical components of the telecommunications and cable infrastructure and connect to underground communication lines that provide telephone, internet, and cable services to homes and businesses. Damage to these facilities can disrupt services to multiple residences and businesses at the same time, including facilities and individuals that rely on telecommunications for public safety and emergency communications.”
The estimated damage from these incidents is nearly $40,000. Several of the incidents have resulted in the loss of telecommunications services for approximately 12 to 24 hours.
Sheriff Abbott added, “These communication systems may be relied upon for 911 and other emergency communications, as well as household emergency devices such as medical alert and Life Alert-type systems. A disruption to these services could have serious, and potentially life-threatening, consequences for individuals who depend on these systems to summon immediate assistance.”
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating these incidents and is working closely with telecommunications providers to identify those responsible. Investigators believe the damage is intentional and are examining whether the incidents are connected.
Bloomingdale Telephone Company is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for these acts.
Investigators are asking residents and businesses in the affected areas to review any available surveillance footage, including security cameras and Ring doorbell systems, for suspicious vehicles or individuals during the overnight hours. Anyone who has observed suspicious activity near telecommunications utility pedestals, has surveillance video, or has information that may assist investigators is encouraged to contact the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Abbott concluded, “This type of vandalism is more than simply property damage. These telecommunications systems are critical infrastructure that our residents, businesses, and public-safety agencies depend upon. Intentionally damaging these systems can disrupt essential services and potentially prevent someone from getting the help they need during an emergency. We are asking the public to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious that may help us identify those responsible.”
