Sturgis volleyball opens season with victory over White Pigeon

STURGIS — The Lady Trojans welcomed White Pigeon to town Wednesday, and started their season off with a 3-0 victory. Sturgis took down the Lady Chiefs by the scores of 25-18, 25-11 and 25-21.
Cora Phillips recorded five kills, while Madelyn Oswald and Kendall Oxender chipped in with two kills each. “The girls played well for their first match”, stated Sturgis head coach Sarah Arreola.
As for White Pigeon, Kadance Smith led the way with 11 kills, three blocks, and three aces. Arianna Back had five kills, two blocks, two digs and an ace, and Riley Richardson had four kills. Kate Montandon had 17 assists.
White Pigeon head coach Melissa Gales said her team is a fairly young team, with four freshmen and a sophomore filling half the roster, and that “some nerves were evident.”
“We made some great runs, we led most of the third set, and we learned a lot about ourselves and team tonight,” White Pigeon head coach Melissa Gales said. “We have some easy fixes to make that will drastically change the momentum of our game.”
