While the lakeshore hums, the inland heart of Allegan County keeps its own summer rhythm — free riverfront concerts in Allegan, country farmers markets in Otsego, and the quiet back roads of Hamilton and Pullman. It’s a slower, greener kind of summer out here — and a good week to get to know the county seat and its country neighbors. Here’s what’s happening from Thursday, Aug. 6 through Wednesday, Aug. 12, with each stop’s town noted up front.
Thursday, Aug. 6
The week starts in the county’s rural stretches. In Pullman, the sprawling Allegan State Game Area — some 50,000 acres of forest, marsh and river — offers miles of trails, birding and fishing, with the historic Innisfree Estate nearby for a slower kind of getaway. In Allegan, the Allegan Farmers Market runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with local produce, flowers and homemade goods. The Allegan County Historical Society’s museum and John Pahl Historic Village are open for a step back in time, and the Kalamazoo River draws kayakers and even zipliners through the heart of downtown. Rainy day? Allegan Event on River Street packs in the largest indoor ropes course in Michigan, a climbing wall and an arcade — an easy family fallback. The Allegan District Library, 331 Hubbard St., also opens the day with its weekly Preschool Storytime at 10:30 a.m. for ages 3 to 5.
Friday, Aug. 7
In Allegan, the free Rollin’ on the River concert series brings The Bootstrap Boys — a hard-driving Michigan country band — to the Riverfront Stage at Riverfront Plaza, with two hours of live music starting at 7 p.m. The series runs Fridays through Aug. 28, drawing touring acts from across the country to the banks of the Kalamazoo. Bring a lawn chair and settle in; it’s free and family-friendly.
Saturday, Aug. 8
In Otsego, the Otsego Farmers Market fills the Otsego Church of God lot, 112 Kalamazoo St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with fresh produce, baked goods, handmade soaps, woodwork and live music — the market also runs Power of Produce days for kids and the occasional themed ‘doggy day.’ In Allegan, the evening belongs to Music at Mahan, a free Saturday-night concert series in Mahan Park presented by the Allegan chapter of the Kalamazoo Folklife Organization — this week featuring the bluegrass of Blue Roads from 7 to 9 p.m. It’s a laid-back way to cap the weekend’s busiest day.
Sunday, Aug. 9
Sunday is made for the outdoors. In Otsego, the Kalamazoo River and the town’s riverside trails and parks invite a lazy paddle or an easy walk. In Hamilton, the roadside farm stands are at their peak-season best — a fine day for a country drive through some of the county’s richest farmland and a basket of sweet corn, tomatoes and late blueberries.
Monday, Aug. 10
In Allegan, Fork in the Road turns downtown into a food-truck rally from 5 to 8 p.m., with a rotating lineup of trucks and trailers from around West Michigan — a weekly Monday tradition that runs through the end of August. Earlier that day, the Allegan District Library throws a Teen Pizza Party and Game Day at 2 p.m. for grades 6 to 12. Grab a bite and stroll the historic Milling District, where the Regent Theatre and a cluster of shops round out an easy evening downtown.
Tuesday, Aug. 11
In Otsego, the Otsego Farmers Market returns for its Tuesday-evening edition, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Otsego Church of God, 112 Kalamazoo St. — a relaxed after-work stop for fresh produce, flowers and local goods before the season winds down in late August. In Allegan, the Allegan District Library hosts Lapsit Storytime at 10:30 a.m. for the littlest readers and, that evening, an adult Book Club at 6:30 p.m. digging into Amy Tintera’s “Listen for the Lie.”
Wednesday, Aug. 12
The week winds down with the library out in the open. In Allegan, the Allegan District Library brings Family Storytime to the Hanson Park Gazebo at 10 a.m. (all ages, weather permitting), then hosts Recess for Adults — a relaxed hour of games and crafts with The Arc of Allegan County — from 2 to 3 p.m. It’s otherwise a quiet, pretty afternoon in Allegan — good for the riverfront, the shops of the Milling District, or a swim at Littlejohn Park. And across the county, the countdown is on to the Allegan County Fair — one of the nation’s largest and longest-running, dating to 1852 — which rolls into the Allegan fairgrounds next month with midway rides, grandstand shows and livestock barns. Mark the calendar. However you spend it, Allegan County’s inland summer rolls on at its own gentle pace.
