Two confirmed tornadoes have left $2.2 million in damage in Allegan County.
Both Allegan County tornadoes spent less than 10 minutes on the ground and ranked at an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. The twisters had wind speeds of 90 mph and 95 mph.
The damage estimate i a press release from was projected by the Allegan County Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Of the total, only $440,000 in damage to government property is eligible for reimbursement by the Michigan State Police.
The Allegan County Board of Commissioners declared a state of emergency shortly after the storms. The declaration could open up more recovery resources for the county to tap into. A state of emergency was also declared in Kalamazoo County, just to the south.
The damage assessment will be submitted to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office to consider whether to issue a state-level emergency declaration.
County residents aren’t currently eligible for financial assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the release said. Residents and business owners should contact their insurance carriers, the release advised.
