Before school even started on the morning of Friday, September 19th, Allegan Public Schools (APS) notified parents that a former Allegan High School student who is currently enrolled in the Allegan Online program had been arrested due to a “potential threat.”
According to APS Superintendent, James Antoine, the incident began when federal authorities noticed multiple “concerning online conversations involving the student.” From there, he says, the feds alerted officers with the Allegan City Police Department, who went to the student’s home, “found credible evidence of a possible incident,” and promptly arrested the student.
He also stated that the student “remains in custody as law enforcement and the school district work together to complete the investigation while allowing any potential criminal proceedings — and the school disciplinary process — to unfold.”
Due to the investigation details still being finalized, he was unable to share any more information.
Superintendent Antoine concluded his statement with “this situation also serves as a reminder that safety is a shared responsibility. In many cases, someone has prior knowledge of a potential threat,” and “together, we can help prevent incidents before they occur.” He urged anyone who becomes aware of concerning behaviors to please contact local law enforcement, use the safety tools available at https://alleganps.org/safety, or submit a confidential tip through the Michigan State Police’s OK2SAY program.
