Absentee/Early Voting ballots for the August 6, 2024, Primary Election have been made available. Voters who are Early Voters have received their ballots, and completed ballots are rolling into precinct offices. This is an extremely important election as the winners will go forward to the November 2024 election ballot.
Primary Elections are often considered an event to stay home, but for a number of positions across Allegan County and the State of Michigan, the August 6, 2024, election is extremely important. Some of the most important races on the local level will be decided in the primary because once party candidates face off in August, they will have no opponent during the November 2024 election.
Michigan is an “open primary” state which means that any voter may participate in either party’s primary election, regardless of that voter’s partisan affiliation. The winner of a primary election is the candidate who receives the greatest number of votes cast for that office, even if he or she does not win an outright majority of all votes cast.
Because it is a Primary Election, voters will need to decide if they will request a Republican or Democrat ballot. There is no straight ticket voting. Voters must educate themselves on the candidates and their goals if elected. The more local the opponents, the more likely that the voter will know and respect all candidates running.
For those unsure of their polling place or how to register to vote, check on the Allegan County Clerk website https://www.allegancounty.org/departments/elections or call (269) 673-0450.
