Around 7:30pm on Saturday, April 26th, Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene of a tragic vehicle crash on Baseline Road, near Hillside Drive and Baseline Lake, in-between Allegan and Gobles.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a westbound pickup truck driver lost control of their vehicle, crossed over the centerline, and side-swiped another truck heading eastbound. The collision then forced the westbound vehicle to veer off of the roadway and hit several bystanders, a tree, and flip over into a shallow portion of Baseline Lake.
Two of the bystanders, as well as the driver and passenger of the westbound truck, were immediately rushed to the hospital. Authorities said one of the bystanders has unfortunately succumbed to their injuries, but have not released the other three’s conditions.
No one in the eastbound truck was hurt.
The names and information of everyone involved are being withheld as authorities continue to investigate
In the Southwest Michigan Scanner Facebook group, one resident of Baseline Lake shared a little bit more context. She said there was a mother, a father, and their young daughter sitting by the lake reading a book, when all of a sudden, this white pickup came speeding down Baseline Lake with a seemingly intoxicated driver. The white pickup hit another oncoming truck and careened into the father and daughter.
Although, Wilcox Newspapers was unable to verify her claims, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office has said that they suspect both speed and alcohol contributed to the devastating crash.
