Bill Clinton trumps for Harris in South Haven

By James Windell

Former President Bill Clinton came to South Haven on Wednesday, October 30 for a quick campaign speech promoting Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Appearing in Michigan for the first time during this campaign season, Clinton gave a speech in Muskegon and stopped off briefly in South Haven before going on to Benton Harbor. Although not originally scheduled to stop in South Haven, it was decided that he had enough time in his schedule to talk to the Democratic party faithful before going on to the next event.
Speaking to a crowd of about 75 people and standing behind a lectern on the porch of a home at 455 Jones Avenue, Clinton said he was used to doing “front porch speeches.” Prior to Clinton speaking, short speeches were given by a Democratic field organizer and Joey Andrews, who is running for re-election as a State Representative from District 38.
During Clinton’s informal talk, he told anecdotes about his life, his campaigns for President, and his relationships with Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. “I know both of the candidates – and have for years,” he said. Talking about Trump, Clinton said that “When Trump abandons the Constitution, that is a step too far.” He went on to say about Harris that “I think she believes in the Constitution.”
He compared their economic plans and said about Harris that “Her’s is a lot better.” Near the end of his talk, he said that the outcome of the election in Michigan is vital to the Democrats: “We can’t get there without Michigan.”
