MATTAWAN – The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office reported on Friday, July 25, the discovery of a deceased man in the Village of Mattawan, according to a press release from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
Based on initial findings, it appeared to be an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety, according to Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott. Sheriff Abbott said the identity of the deceased man has been confirmed as the individual reported missing last month from Mattawan.
An autopsy determined that the cause of death was self-inflicted.
Out of respect for the family, the name of the deceased man and the family were not released.
Several weeks ago, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office took a missing person report involving an individual from the Mattawan area. The original report and circumstances at the time did not indicate any suspicious activity or foul play, according to Sheriff Abbott.
The investigation has been closed. Detectives from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office were assisted by the Michigan State Police and the Mattawan Police Department.
“We appreciate the community’s understanding and ask for continued patience and respect for the family during this difficult time,” said Sheriff Abbott.
Sheriff Abbott urges that if you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, help is available and to call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.
