Canvassers seek pay increase

ALLEGAN — Citing increased duties related to changes in state
election law, specifically early voting and expanded absentee voting, the Allegan County Board of Canvassers last week passed a resolution asking the Board of Commissioners to increase its per diem pay to $200 for a full day and $100 for a half day when meeting.
The canvassers are also seeking mileage reimbursement at the prevailing IRS rate. The canvassers are responsible for certifying the results of elections, ensuring the results are accurate and devoid of error. In addition, the canvassers are also seeking a $15 meal allotment on the day of canvassing board meetings. The Board of Canvassers is a four-member body, consisting of two members each nominated by the Republican and
Democrat parties. It is not clear when the Commissioners will consider the request.
The board of canvassers meets several times a year, typically more days during even numbered years when party primary and general elections are held and the opportunity exists for contested election results, commissioner chairman James Storey said.
