Christian Neighbors offers options for hybrid auction

Christian Neighbors is trying something a bit different this year for their major fundraiser. Thursday, May 12 will see the return of the Reflection of Hope Auction at 5:30 at the Silo while the online auction format used for the last two years will be held May 13-17.
Terri Shaler, Executive Director, reported that survey results indicated some preferred the online event while others were eager to attend the in-person affair, so they decided to make the fundraiser a hybrid experience.
“The auction is always a great time with many interesting items to bid on,” said Steve Tibbitts who has frequently attended the auction with wife Jana. One of the interesting items this year will be scavenger hunts from Let’s Roam & Adventures.
The auction will follow the same format used in the past. Attendees can bid on silent auction items and baskets as well as bid in the live auction. Some of the live auction items include a ring from Hart Jewelers, a kayak, a trip to Florida, and a patio set.
A raffle for a 58” smart TV will also take place, and those wishing to donate without purchasing items can do so during the reverse auction. “The evening also allows people to learn about what we do and how the money raised is spent,” Shaler noted.
Attendees can enjoy hearty appetizers and desserts in addition to a cash bar.
The five-day online auction will feature a variety of items, including a salmon fishing trip for four from South Haven.
“Our goal is $65,000, which will go to the emergency financial assistance fund. This fund is to support things like helping people whose utilities have been shut-off or who need help with rent to avoid eviction. We are trying to keep people stable in their homes,” said Shaler.
Tibbitts added, “the funds go to help those struggling to meet some very basic needs, needs that most of us take for granted.  Christian Neighbors does a very good job getting these services to those who need them.”
The event has sold out in the past and, according to Shaler, they are moving fast. Information on how to participate in the online auction will be available through Christian Neighbors’ website and Facebook page closer to the event date.
Anyone wishing to donate an item or a basket may contact Eric Hoffman at the number above. According to Shaler, quilts are always a popular item, and they would welcome more of those as well as handmade pottery and stained glass.
Christian Neighbors was founded in 1983 by the local churches to respond to people in need in the community and has become a community agency that is also supported by individuals and businesses throughout the community. Their “mission is to provide local families in need with food, emergency financial assistance and skill building education to create self-sufficiency.” The organization serves people in the Plainwell, Otsego and Martin school districts including Alamo & Cooper.
