Forecast for the coming days shows temperature will hover near single digits, especially overnight. Sturgis Department of Public Services is asking residents to be conscious of the potential for frozen water lines.
To help prevent freezing, officials recommend that residents allow a slow stream of water, around the width of a pencil, to run continuously from a single faucet.
That approach is no guarantee to prevent freezing, but is considered the “best possible measure,” according to DPS.
Symptoms of frozen service lines:
Slight decrease in water pressure
Water appears rusty or cloudy
Extremely cold water (35 degrees or below)
Some homes are at higher risk for freezing pipes. A few factors:
History of the water service freezing.
Smaller water service lines (5/8-inch)
Water service line travels under the street or driveway to the home or building. Residents can determine if water service lines run under the street by locating the nearest fire hydrant. If it is on the opposite side of the street, the service line most likely runs under the street.
If you suspect your home may have a frozen water line, call Sturgis Department of Public Services, 269-651-2879 from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., or 269-467-4195 after regular business hours.
