Clare’s boys golf team took third place with a score of 334 win in the Division 3 Regional 13 golf tournament last week at Belvedere in Charlevoix
Clare tied with Pinconning for third place but lost in a tie breaker which meant both teams had to count a fifth score. Traverse City St. Francis won the event with a 303 and Tawas was second with 325. The top three teams advanced to the state finals on June 6-7 at the Meadows Golf Course at Grand Valley State University.
Scores for Clare: Bryce Wieferich 74; Pierson Gallagher 79; Colton Pung 88;; Dane Kruskamp 93; Ethan Rogers 102
Wieferich qualified to play in the state finals as an individual.
“Bryce was in the top three of non qualifying schools and this put him in position for the State finals,” coach Chris Fedewa said. “Clare was in 10th place midway through the day but Pierson Gallagher and Bryce Wieferich turned it up a notch and got us back in the running. It came down to the last four holes and I was very happy with how the team responded to the pressure.
“We were up by two strokes in the last two holes. A late surge by Pinconning caused the tie. We lost in the tie breaker. I’m very proud of how we came back and my players showed a lot of grit. I am proud to coach them.”
Farwell compete in the Division 4 region at Mount Pleasant Country Club on May 28.
Farwell was seventh with a 372 team score. Scorers for Farwell were junior Zane Hanna (87), senior Marshall Gauld (88), freshman Treyton Lassen (92), Brayden Travis (105), and freshman Jamison Santure (122).
