Clare’s Art Alley is set to unveil a new mural this weekend

By Christopher Johnson

Clare’s art alley is getting its own splash of fall colors.
Over the course of this week, the Clare County Arts Council has been busy with a new addition to the gallery space winding behind Cops & Doughnuts.
Over a conversation of new brochures for the quilt committee, the idea was raised that something should be painted on the west wall so main street traffic can see the art better in passing, piquing interest in the alleyway. There was unanimous agreement, and it didn’t take much convincing for Greg Rhynerson to furnish the paint.
However, there was also some creative input by Julie Wells, an art teacher from Midland, who penciled in the initial design as a blueprint for the volunteers to run with.
Which consisted of twenty young people working on and off.
Except for Jane Sartor of course, who has overseen the addition with much enthusiasm.
“It’s really going to be nice”, says Jane. Always proud to see a vision take form. “They did a really beautiful job. Art Alley is really sprucing up”.
What manifested on the wall is a sort of quadriptych, depicting four barn quilts hanging outdoors against a soft blue sky and clouds, that almost carry a Toy Story gentleness. Framed by fall trees on either side. It’s a great parallel that compliments the long existent mural on the opposite wall featuring a myriad of colorful subjects.
Even local business owner, John Gross, has noticed. Who, coming next spring, has expressed interest in having the rear face of his ice cream shop painted also.
“We have too many irons in the fire right now as it is”, says Jane. Who remains one of most industrious women of her age. However, it’s almost certain that more painting projects will continue when weather allows. Taking advantage of whatever remaining wall space that can be personalized.
Even the donuts on the wall next to the current project got a touch up of paint. Anytime the art team can improve upon something, they do, and it’s resulted in a beautiful locale of ongoing adoration.
The team is scheduled to finish their mural this Saturday, with the final detail of a clothesline, unifying the composition. So be sure to pop in and congratulate them on their finished effort.
