FARWELL — Farwell’s football fell to St. Louis 28-12 on Friday in Jack Pine Conference football action
St. Louis started the game by scoring on a 9 play 55 yard drive to make it 6-0.
Farwell would respond on its second drive when Mason Esterline took it in for the score from 65 yards away on a quarterback keeper. The first quarter would end with it tied up 6-6.
St. Louis had a touchdown before the half to make it 14-6 at half time.
Farwell took the opening drive of the second half 60 yards in eight plays to make it 14-12. St. Louis scored to make it 22-12.
St. Louis recovered the onside kick. “They would eat up the rest of the third quarter before scoring once again early in the fourth to make it 28-12,” Waddell said.
Farwell would begin to mount a comeback, but an inadvertent whistle by the referee would call back a big gain on third down that erased a first down. St. Louis would get the ball back and was able to run must of the clock out.
“Our players showed toughness, heart, and grit tonight,” Waddell said. “St. Louis was physically a much larger team than us. But our players fought hard and did not give up.
“Offensively we were led by a gritty performance by our sophomore quarterback Mason Esterline. They brought a lot of pressure at our young quarterback tonight. He hung in there, was tough and made some big plays for us.”
Esterline led the way with 172 yards rushing on 14 carries with a TD. He also added 50 yards through the air.
Zane Hanna had 42 yards receiving and Marcus Hunziker added a TD on the ground.
Defensively Marcus Hunziker totaled 17 tackles. Hunter Edlin and Blake Sholes each had 10. Dylan Mitchell and Zane Hanna each had an interception.
“This week we play Pinconning. They are well coached in their single wing system. They also have a very good running back. Dany Dubay is an explosive runner, trying to limit him will be a big part of the game plan this week,” Waddell said.
Farwell is 2-2 overall.
