THREE RIVERS — Three Rivers’ girls’ basketball team got a buzzer-beating shot by Dani Glass to down Constantine on Senior Night by a final score of 34-32.
Glass hit a baseline shot on the run with seconds left to beat the buzzer and send the Wildcats home victorious over the Falcons.
Glass led the team with 17 points on the evening, followed by Kyrstin Stalker with seven points and Braylee Burg with six points. For Constantine, Jaedyn Herlein led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Kailee Jones and Jaelyn Buglione with five points each.
With the win, Three Rivers moves to 8-11 on the season and finishes out the season with a home-and-home against Niles.
Sturgis blasts Bronson
STURGIS — The Lady Trojans faced off against the Bronson Vikings last Wednesday, and when the final buzzer sounded, Sturgis walked away with the 51-13 victory. “It was a good team win,” Sturgis coach Andy Phillips said. “We came out with good energy and shared the ball better against the zone.”
Angela Cary had a strong game, scoring 22 points, while Sydney Bir finished with nine. Addison and Kenzie Eicher both added four points, while Kinder Smith and Madelyn Oswald rounded out the Sturgis offense with three and two points, respectively.
White Pigeon splits with Lawrence, Cassopolis
WHITE PIGEON — The Chiefs hosted Lawrence last week in a girls’ basketball contest, and White Pigeon, after allowing only seven first-half points, went on to the 32-16 victory. Leading 14-1 after the first eight minutes, the winners surrendered just 15 points the rest of the way.
Sadie McDaniel had nine points to lead the Lady Chiefs, followed by Ava Sowards-Haack and Kadance Smith, who both finished with eight. Sydney McClure rounded out the offense for White Pigeon, scoring seven. McDaniel had three assists and nine rebounds, Rachel Byler finished with nine boards and two assists, while McClure and Smith came up with six and four rebounds, respectively.
The Chiefs took the trip to Cassopolis on Tuesday to face the Lady Rangers, and headed home with the loss, 51-32. White Pigeon was up at the half, 22-20, but fell behind by five points heading into the fourth quarter, 34-29. A very cold-shooting final eight minutes proved to be costly for the Lady Chiefs, as they managed to score just three points the rest of the way.
Kadance Smith and Sadie McDaniel scored nine points each to lead the Chiefs, while Rachel Byler and Sydney McClure both finished with five. McDaniel was the leading rebounder, grabbing nine, while Smith finished with eight, followed by Ava Sowards-Haack, who pulled down seven missed shots. McClure dished out three assists to lead the team, and Smith led in steals, picking off six.
With the loss, White Pigeon stands at 13-4 in the Southwest 10, 13-7 overall.
Mendon shut down New Buffalo
MENDON — Mendon hosted New Buffalo for a girls’ hoops contest Tuesday night, and the Lady Hornets defense put the clamps on the Bison in their 36-17 win. Gracie Schultz tossed in 18 points for the winners, followed by Jadyn Samson with seven and Cienna Nightingale, who added six points. Mattea Bingaman and Brooke Gerth rounded out the offense for Mendon, with three and two points, respectively.
Gerth led the team in rebounds with seven, Laney Buchanan added four boards, while Bingaman and Schultz finished with three rebounds each. Samson picked off four steals, and Rowan Allen finished with three thefts. Samson also led the Hornets with five assists. Nightingale had the only blocked shot in the win.
Mendon, the top overall seed in the district, will square off against the winner of Marcellus and Howardsville Christian on Wednesday, March 4th. That game tips off at 5:30 p.m. in White Pigeon.
Centreville routs Hartford, Bloomingdale
CENTREVILLE — Centreville was able to outscore their opponents by a combined score of 105-16 this past week, notching runaway wins over Hartford and Bloomingdale.
Against Hartford on Thursday, Feb. 19, the Bulldogs got a convincing win, 53-4. Berkley Shingledecker had 15 points, five assists and two steals to lead Centreville, followed by Drew Alexander with 12 points, seven steals and four assists, Leah Roberts with 11 points, five rebounds and five steals, and Ellie Reed with six points.
“Our girls came out on all cylinders tonight with excellent effort, attitudes, and execution,” head coach Jill Peterson said.
On Tuesday, Centreville notched a 52-12 win over Bloomingdale. Lena Reed was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs, scoring 12 points on the evening, followed by Emerson Hackett with 10 points, Ellie Reed with seven points, and Mary Stears with five points, seven rebounds and three assists.
With the result, Centreville improves to a record of 17-4, with a 15-2 record in the Southwest 10.
Constantine races by Parchment, loses by 20 to Schoolcraft
CONSTANTINE — The Falcons got a big win this week over Parchment, 61-18. Jaedyn Herlein and Jaelyn Buglione both finished with 13 points in the victory, while Kailee Jones added 12.
Constantine headed to Schoolcraft last week for a girls’ hoops contest, and the host Eagles came away with the 39-19 win. Kailee Jones led the Lady Falcons with five points, while Raeann Michalek and Jaedyn Herlein both finished with four.
Constantine will now face the Bronson Vikings in district action, with that game to be played on Monday, March 2nd, in Union City. Tip time is set for 7 pm.
Colon comes back to defeat Jackson Christian, loses to Mendon, defeats Tekonsha
COLON — Finding themselves behind at halftime, the Colon girls came back to defeat Jackson Christian last week, 33-28. The game was tied after one, 9-9, and 16-15 at the break before out-scoring the Royals 18-12 in the second half.
Lily Preston tossed in 17 points to lead the Magi, while Raegan Thaxton scored 12. Braelyn Thaxton finished with three points, and Jaci Borgert hit a free throw. Preston also booked seven rebounds and five steals, and Madi Kulpinski dished out four assists. “This was probably the best defense we’ve played all year,” stated coach Beth Preston. “Jaci Borgert did a tremendous job guarding their top player, and Lily (Preston) hit some clutch shots down the stretch.” Preston also added that “Raegan (Thaxton) hit some key free throws to seal the win…the girls really gutted out the win. This was a good victory to help gain some momentum heading into districts.”
Earlier last week, Colon squared off against first-place Mendon, and the Lady Hornets prevailed, 45-31. The Magi found themselves down 13-6 after the first quarter, and 21-12 at the half. Mendon was able to hold the edge the rest of the way and come away with the win.
Rowan Allen led the winners with 17 points, Cienna Nightingale added nine, while Gracie Schultz finished with eight points, while Jaydn Samson added six and teammate Brooke Gerth scored five points. Nightingale was the leading rebounder for Mendon with six, Schultz grabbed five missed shots, while Gerth added four. Also for the Hornets, Samson recorded five assists and four steals in the win. Nightingale recorded one blocked shot as well.
Lily Preston led Colon with 15 points, Braelyn Thaxton scored five, while Piper Groff and Raegan Thaxton both added four points. Jaci Borgert and Madi Kulpinski rounded out the scoring for the Magi, scoring two and one, respectively.
The Lady Magi took care of business Wednesday, as they completely dominated Tekonsha, 66-13. The Lady Indians were held to five points or less in all four quarters. A 21-2 lead at the end of one told the tale, as Colon rolled to the 53-point win.
Lily Preston had 15 points, four assists and three steals to lead the charge, while Raegan Thaxton finished with 14. Piper Groff added 10 points and five boards, while Ruby Bower put seven points in the book. Also for the winners, Braelyn Thaxton and Matilyn Cunningham both scored four, while Aliyah Edwards finished with three points. Rounding out the offense for Colon was Madi Kulpinski and Belle Noga, both with two points. Kulpinski also grabbed three steals.
