Gobles football players complete busy summer

By John Raffel

GOBES – Coach Greg Eichler is coming off a busy summer program for his Gobles 8-player team and is anxious to get going on Aug. 12 when practices start.
The season opens at Colon on Aug. 29.
“We’re having a minicamp for varsity and JV and an offense and defense install,” Eihler said of his plans for this week. “We’ve had 35 players come between varsity and junior varsity,” Eichler said. “That’s pretty par for the course. It’s generally been around 40 every year.
Gobles has had weightlifting four times a week plus some 7-on-7 passing leagues at Gobles.
“We’ve been busy and the kids have been working hard,” Eicher said, adding on the passing leagues, we’ve usually has six to eight games every night.. We have three rounds every night where a team gets to play each other. We’ve had some good teams from southwest Michigan come.”
Eichler noted his offense does not rely on the pass a lot.
It’s three things,” he said. “The 7-on-7s allows our kids to compete with other kids not on our their own team. It helps with defensive alignment, assignment and coverages and allows them conditioning.”
Two-days will start on Aug.12. But we’re further ahead this year of where we’ve been going into two-a-day,” Eichler said
Gobles’ football team had an 8-3 record in 8-player action a year ago
“Overall, it was a great season and our program continued to make strides,” Eichler said after last year. “Our kids worked extremely hard to move the needle for our program, and we look forward to building off of our recent success. The season didn’t end how we wanted. Our program has high expectations and those expectations include winning in November and winning championships. We will get there, but we have plenty of work to do.”
Gobles lost in the second round of the playoffs.
