A 31-year-old Gobles man faces several charges following an incident Wednesday, Aug. 6, according to a press release from eh Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident took place at approximately 10 p.m. in the 25000 block of 36th Street.
Deputies responded to a report of a female victim who arrived at a neighbor’s residence in a hysterical state, with visible bruising and bleeding. Investigation revealed that her boyfriend had punched and kicked her multiple times, broke her phone as she attempted to call 911, and confined her in a bathroom during the assault. The victim eventually escaped, ran down the street, and sought help from neighbors, who assisted her and called 911.
While deputies were interviewing the victim, they, along with Michigan State Police (MSP), responded to the suspect’s residence to locate him. The male fled on foot and could not be immediately located. A short time later, a witness reported seeing the suspect riding a bicycle nearby. Deputies responded to the area, located the suspect, and took him into custody without further incident.
The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.
He faces charges of assault by strangulation, unlawful Imprisonment, interfering with electronic communications, and obstructing justice.
