
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency in Allegan County after storms and two tornadoes whipped through the area on May 15.
The declaration frees up state resources for the county to help local response and recovery efforts. It may also open the door to financial assistance to cover eligible response and recovery costs. The state of emergency will last until July 3 at the latest, the governor’s office wrot
On May 15, two EF1 tornadoes touched down in Allegan County: one in the Hopkins/Dorr area and one near Martin. They were among 11 confirmed tornadoes in lower Michigan that night. Winds reached 95 mph and damage from fallen trees and utility lines on homes were reported.

Allegan County’s emergency management agency said its preliminary assessment estimated around $2.2 million in damage from the severe storms. The county declared a local state of emergency.
