Paving on Grand Avenue in Sturgis concluded Nov. 20. It’s the final street project scheduled for 2025.
The pump station project started in early August. Initially, it was set for completion the first week of November. Delayed equipment delivery caused some postponement.
The primary goal of the project was replacement of the pump station, which has components dating to the 1940s, said Barry Cox, engineer for the city of Sturgis.
It involved installing new gravity sanitary sewer to the new pump station location and new force main piping from the pump station into Michigan Avenue.
Grand Avenue was in poor condition and required resurfacing, Cox said. Initially, it was going to be limited to reconstruction of the intersection, about 125 feet on Grand. Officials soon determined the best strategy was to upgrade the entire corridor.
Funding to resurface Grand was part of the 2024-25 city budget, but not part of the official citywide street rehabilitation plan, according to Cox.
“Milestone” street reconstruction scheduled for fall 2025 has concluded. Those segments were on Clay, Cornelia and Electric Court.
In addition, curb and gutter replacement and ADA sidewalk ramps installation were done on Market Street and the Prairie and Enterprise intersection.
Remaining streets in the 2025 program are to be undertaken in spring 2026. They include:
Fawn River Road: M-66 to the railroad tracks.
South Nottawa: Hawthorne Road to South Street, including South Street intersection.
Prairie Avenue: West Congress to Wenzel.
Grove Street.
Market Street: Washington to West Lafayette.
Mortimer Avenue.
