Groundbreaking begins process for SNP/CTE home-building project

On Aug. 20, Sturgis CTE Construction Trades students, in partnership with Sturgis Neighborhood Program, broke ground on the collaborative’s sixth construction project.
It will be the sixth home built through SNP/CTE partnership.
The project involves 38 juniors and seniors from four St. Joseph County schools: Sturgis, Centerville, Colon and White Pigeon.
Kathryn Myers, executive director of SNP, had a directive for the students involved.
“Take pride in what you are building. Every nail, every board, every wall, is building a house that a family will call home – where they will celebrate birthdays, gather for holidays and live their lives,” Myers said.
Funding partners: City of Sturgis, Sturgis Area Community Foundation, St. Joseph County United Way, and SJC Career and Technical Education.
SNP’s connection with CTE focuses on partnerships with construction trades industry professionals who provide affordable craftsmanship and offer students opportunities for hands-on experiences in the construction trades, according to SNP.
More than 700 students in the county are involved with CTE this year.
Sturgis Neighborhood Program has been a housing nonprofit for 34 years, and has helped with 30 community improvement projects throughout the city of Sturgis.
