A Harrison man, Nathanael Coats is facing multiple felony charges after he threatened a family member with a handgun and fired it inside his home.
Tuesday, February 11, at 5:22 pm, Clare County Central Dispatch received a call reporting an assault involving a firearm. The assault reportedly happened 2320 N Athey Ave in Hamilton Township.
During the altercation, that Coats, 35, of Harrison, had discharged a round from the handgun inside the residence. The family member was able to escape the residence and head to a neighbor’s house where the person was able to contact the police, leaving Nathanael alone in the home.
Clare County Sheriff’s Office deputies with the Clare County Sheriff’s Office responded when they arrived they discovered that Coats, 35, had threatened a family member with a handgun.
When Deputies arrived on scene, they attempted to make contact with Nathanael, who had locked himself inside the residence. He refused to acknowledge the Deputies who then obtained a search warrant for the house. Once the search warrant was complete, Deputies were able to make contact with Coats by telephone and convinced him to exit the residence. Once out of the residence, he was taken into custody.
Coats was charged with one count of an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon; one count of Possession of a Firearm While Under the Influence; One count of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited person; one count of Discharge a Firearm in or at a Building; and three counts of Felony Firearms (possession of firearm while in commission of a felony).
Coats was arraigned in Clare County’s 80th District Court. His bond was set at $80,000/10%.
He remains lodged in the Clare County Jail. No one was injured during this incident.
