Lawrence community launches effort to rebuild playground

LAWRENCE – The Lawrence community is launching a fundraising effort to rebuild the playground at Lawrence Village Park, a two-acre park that has served families for decades and draws visitors from across Van Buren County.
The original wooden playground was built in 1995 during a week-long community build, when volunteers came together to create a special gathering place for children and families. After nearly 30 years, the structure has reached the end of its life cycle, and plans are underway to replace it with updated, accessible play equipment.
In December 2025, the project received a grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources through the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The grant requires a 50/50 local match, meaning every donated dollar will be doubled.
The total project goal is $605,000, with the first phase focused on community fundraising. Residents are encouraged to get involved, support the effort, and help create a space future generations can enjoy.
