LAWRENCE — Anita Robles is volleyball coach at Lawrence and is getting excited for the season.
“On Aug. 11, we will be setting up and sending reminders for tryouts,” Robles said. “The week of Aug. 11th we will host tryouts for our team testing their skill level for placement on the team. Our first several days will be testing skill level and creating a team bond with the girls.
“We should have a good amount of girls but most will be lower classmen. We do have a tournament on Aug. 21st.
I am very happy that a lot of our underclassmen have been consistently showing up.
“This has been the biggest group we’ve gotten throughout the summer in years. I really wish more of the upperclassmen could’ve attended.”
South Haven Girls Golf
SOUTH HAVEN — South Haven golf coach Barry Shanley has announced plans for the first week of practice. “Monday we will hand-out equipment; team bags, shirts, clubs, marked practice balls for drills,” he said. “Then we will break off into 3 teams who will rotate every half hour on the range with me, on the chipping green with short game coach Anton Badenhorst and on the putting green with JV coach Pat Fitton.
“We have not had an athletic director until last Friday…so we are catching-up on a schedule,” Shanley said. “We do not have tryouts because I have never cut a player in my 46 seasons so far as a head coach. Golf is a lifetime sport which we want to make fun so the players will learn and play their whole lives.
“The remaining practice days the first week will be divided between playing and more drills on HawksHead’s tremendous practice facilities. We won’t know for sure how many players will be out for golf until opening day, but we are hoping for an ideal 12 or 14 girls, and may have a teamful of middle school players.”
South Haven golfers have had a busy schedule.
“I have a summer junior golf tour, with about 100 golfers from southwest Michigan. We have 10 18-hole events on great courses and several of my South Haven players competed, which is a positive sign,” Shanley said. “South Haven should have another successful season with a great mix of veteran players and several promising newcomers. We love to also see brand new players who will learn to be competitive much earlier than they probably expect.”
