May I Walk with You? A BEAUTIFUL CHURCH

It’s done! It didn’t take hundreds of years as some cathedrals in Europe and certainly didn’t cost as much, but the renovation of St. Cecilia Church is finally finished. My first reaction was awe! We no longer participate in mass in the Blessed Michael McGivney Hall, but in a very beautiful space.
A bit of history. About twenty years ago, Father Patrick Jankoviak envisioned and initiated a renovation project. Father Joseph Ryan left us in pretty good financial shape, but most was needed for repairs and upgrades. Another effort was made, but was cut short by the Realignment of Parishes, when all large capital spending was suspended as the Diocese of Saginaw closed and merged many parishes. Shortly after that we experienced the COVID 19 pandemic, and our church activities were suspended. Yet, after many starts and fits, and numerous pastors, a few years ago a plan came together. With Msgr. Koper, who came out of retirement to be with us, and the great work of many-especially the Finance Commission, a workable plan was formed. It is a miracle to me.
We have wooden pews, that were donated, with kneelers. There is new carpeting and floor plan, combining traditional and modern architecture. The altar is more centrally located. The beautiful cross from St. Henry Church hangs above the sanctuary. A commissioned statue of Mary is in a place of honor in the gathering area. Statues are appropriately located for all. The Stations of the Cross are well lit and easy to see. One feels the presence of God upon entering this worship space. We have had a wedding, funerals, and baptisms. We probably ought to have more confessions. On top of all this new office and meeting spaces were done.
Our Lady of Hope will be offering an adult formation program named Project Rescue with its major themes of creation, captivity, rescue, and response beginning after the Christmas season. I hope all parish adults will attend. While it is very important to have a beautiful building, it is even more important for each of us to renew our relationship with Jesus. Some say that Jesus did not commission us to build beautiful spaces, but to grow in holiness, becoming beautiful for him. We can do both!
People say, “I love the pews and kneelers!” Others have said, “I feel like I am in church again.” Others have said things like it feels like home, and I can really see the Stations of the Cross, and I like being here!
One thing I’ve noticed is the growing number of young families with children in attendance. Bring them on! A simple, “Thankyou for bringing your children today. It made my day!” Helps them feel welcome. Clare is a faith filled community. Almost everyone is a believer even if they don’t go to church. I hope that you at least visit St. Cecilia Church. Maybe it will feel like home to you, too. Who knows?
“May the Lord bless and keep you. May he let his face shine upon you be gracious to you and give you his peace.”
