An interesting question was recently asked, “Who made God?” Whoa! Growing up in a Catholic Christian home we were taught that God always existed and that he created us. I am reminded of a song by Rich Mullins that reflects our Creed. It goes something like this, “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. He made me. I didn’t make him!” That is not what many sociologists and anthropologists are teaching in our colleges and universities, and some teachers in elementary and secondary schools teach.
Simply stated, some teach that our faith and beliefs are created by society and culture. The world teaches that people make gods because of their weaknesses, and as a way to explain mystery. It is interesting that middle school students can talk about mythical gods of Rome, Greece, the Vikings, Celtics, Hindus, and Islam and not Jesus or Yahweh. When quizzed about God, they simply say he is one of many gods and that the mythical gods are equals. Every god is made by people. He is of no real consequence.
It is a short jump to go from teaching that all people are created equal to saying that all gods are created equal, by people. How sad to believe that people create God! They then go on to say that what ever gods you believe in depends on the society and culture you are born into.
There is some truth in that statement. Yet, when offered the Truth of Jesus Christ, it resonates with them, and they believe in the one true God. Just think about what happened in Mexica and Southwest USA when Mary appeared to Juan Diego in 1531 and gave him the image of herself on his tilma (cape). It is recorded that ten million people became Christians in ten years. That is about 2,750 people per day, asking to be baptized! These were people who worshiped the sun as god, creator, and sustainer of all life to the point where human sacrifice was required to petition and appease the sun god.
When they heard the Truth of Jesus, they overwhelmed the churches wanting to belong. They knew that God created them and that Jesus gave his life so that they might live forever with him in heaven. We also know that we did not create God, but that he created the universe and us too.
Who made God? Nobody, He has no beginning and no end. In love he made us! We are his children, created in his image, whose destiny is to live with him forever. Amen.
“May the Lord bless and keep you. May he let his face shine upon you, be gracious to you and give you his peace.”
