A volunteer deputy, Nicole Shuff, who is a member of the Clare County Sheriff’s Mounted Division, has died from a very serious injury due to an accident at the Clare County Fair shortly after the midway opened Monday evening.
A family member posted on Facebook Wednesday, that Nicole has died.
According to a release from the CCSO Undersheriff Dwayne Miedzianowski, she was on horseback patrol at the fair and responding to a medical call reporting a person who had fallen around 8:15 p.m. Monday evening when she was involved in the accident and fall and sustained serious head injuries. The family member’s post said she was dismounting when the incident happened, fell and hit her head and that the horse fell on her.
She was transported to Midland (MyMichigan Health) Hospital for treatment of the head injury, the Undersheriff said.
Tuesday morning, Sheriff John Wilson posted on Facebook, “I’m asking the people to pray for Deputy Nicole Shuff this morning. Nicole is one of our volunteer Mounted Members and was severely injured last night while working at our county fair. Pray for HER, her Family and the Doctors that GOD guides them, comforts them, and HEALS Nicole. Pray to help us all be strong through this.”
Later that day, Wilson posted that Shuff was “still in Midland and responding to some stimulus.”
An update sent out Wednesday around 11:45 from the Sheriff’s Office said, “Deputy Shuff continues to receive treatment at the hospital. Please continue to pray for her and her family. The family and Sheriff’s Office thanks everyone for their continued support.”
As of 6:45 p.m. Wednesday evening, Midzianowski verified that Nicole was still in the hospital for treatment but did not comment on her condition.
The fair continues through tomorrow, Saturday.
