ANTWERP TOWNSHIP – The Antwerp Township Transfer Station recently saw the completion of a Recycling Barn last fall that has improved the Township’s recycling efforts, according to the Antwerp Township supervisor.
Daniel Ruzick said the township received a recycling grant from the State of Michigan for recycling. General funds and ARPA funds were used in construction, fencing and cameras.
Located at 28251 64th Ave., the transfer site served for many years as the old township dump site.
The Recycling Barn is open on the second Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Electronics that are accepted to be recycled by the Township include computers, VCRs, mobile devices, household batteries, laptops, cable boxes, CRT monitors, servers, routers, network equipment, DVD players and tablets.
All items must be out of the boxes, according to Ruzick, and no items may be left at the door.
Ruzick said styro-foam is also accepted to be recycled and must snap to accept. Large pieces of styro-foam must be broken down. The transfer station will not take bagged foam, loose packing foam or flexible foam.
As of July 15, the Transfer Station began using mechanical gates to enter the Recycling station and is offered to Antwerp Township residents only.
Ruzick said Antwerp Township is currently in discussions with surrounding townships, Texas, Porter and Almena, to use the facility.
The recycling center will accept newspapers in paper bags only, clean metal cans, glass and plastic, which can be co-mingled, and clean cardboard, which must be broken down.
“If the cameras show that individuals are mixing bags in with metal cans, glass, plastic, in plastic bags, that individual’s privileges will be revoked. Also not breaking down cardboard boxes or placing garbage in dumpsters will result in lost privileges.
Antwerp Township residents can obtain a key fob at the Antwerp Township Office during business hours, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The key fob will require a $25 deposit and if lost, a $25 charge to replace.
Antwerp Township, contracted with Best-Way Disposal, also offers pay as you go for garbage, mattresses, drywall and furniture.
