Alan Andrew Veen, age 80 of Clare, joined the spirit of the woods for one final hunt in the great beyond on Tuesday, December 3, 2024
Born on a military base in Auckland, New Zealand to Peter and Freda Veen on June 1, 1944, he made his way to the US via ship.
Al was very proud of his 4.5 years in the US Marine Corps and his time serving as Governor for the District 3 Michigan Bow Hunters Association. He was an active member of the Clare Rod and Gun Club, Harrison Sportsman Club, the MI Long Bow Association, participated in several shooting leagues, and was very passionate about traditional archery. He was a skilled marksman, excellent teacher, and was giving of his time to help others.
He retired from Oakland County in 1994 and moved to Clare where he worked for the Clare Co. Road Commission for a few years. Al later went on to become a driver for the Amish community, which he greatly enjoyed.
Living a full life and enjoying the outdoors, Al was well traveled and loved hunting, fishing and camping. He was a skilled marksman who was passionate about archery. Al made friends easily and knew someone everywhere he went.
Al is survived by his girlfriend and partner in crime, Donna Reed of Sanford; step daughter Kenitha Severn of Clare, step son Mike (Michael) Koontz of Harrison, and step son Tim (Becky) Koontz of Clare; grandchildren: Christopher Koontz, Julie (Matt) Wilkinson, Jill Severn, Krystal (Luc) Romatz, Kerry (Nic) Romatz; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Wanetta Veen, parents, and sister, Frances McCormack.
