Obituary: Byron R. Smith

Byron R. Smith, age 75, of Hersey, formerly of Farwell, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024 at Blodgett Hospice in Grand Rapids.  He was born on March 1, 1948, near Farwell to Robert and Mary (Jarman) Smith.  He had served his Country in the US Air Force during Viet Nam.  Byron had served his communities as a Firefighter with the Surrey Twp. Fire Department for almost 10 years.  He had been the Co-owner of the Bread Basket Restaurant in Clare.  He had worked as a Paramedic with Clare County EMS, Life EMS serving Lake County, MMR serving Crawford County and retired from Mecosta County EMS.  After his retirement he sold Real Estate with Crossroads Realty of Reed City.  Byron met and married Pamela Henry and turned her into Pamela Smith.  Together they had established a little slice of heaven with their little Hobby Farm near Hersey and their beloved Retreat near Cheboygan. 

Byron was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Pamela, a sister-in-law, Dawn (Jackie) Weller of Clare, an aunt, Barbara Root of Mt. Pleasant, a nephew, Tyler Hanson of Chase, Mi., a cousin, Sue Root of St. Johns among others, and many other relatives and friends.

Friends are invited to join his family at a graveside Memorial Service with Military Honors to be held on Wednesday, July 24,2024 at 2 PM in the Surrey Township Cemetery, in Farwell, with Chaplain Kelly Morley officiating.  He will be laid to rest with his parents.  Arrangements for services were in the care of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Homes of Clare and Farwell.  An online condolence register is available at  www.stephenson-wyman.com
