Carolyn “Joyce” Sage, passed away peacefully at Bronson Commons, Mattawan, July 6, 2024. Joyce’s family is extremely grateful to the staff at Bronson Commons and Centrica Care Navigators Hospice for the care they provided to her during her final weeks.
Born in Jackson, Ohio, on March 23, 1925, to the late Charles and Margaret (Jacobs) Cramer, she graduated from Jackson High School in 1943. Joyce spent the summer months with her aunt in Paw Paw, where she met her future husband, Charles Sage. Charles was a pilot during World War II. After his discharge, the couple married in Blythe, California on Feb. 8, 1944. Together, Joyce and Charles spent more than 40 years operating the Hotel DeHamberger in downtown Paw Paw. The “Sage” burger recipe is still a guarded secret!
Joyce was a talented seamstress and was well known for her beautiful quilts, sweaters and clothing. Many items have been passed down as family heirlooms.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Sage; son, Anthony “Tony” (Tina) Sage; niece, Jackie (Mike) Shriver; nephew, Daniel (Pam) Cramer; three grandchildren, Kevin (Renata) Dalrymple, Daren (Rihanna) Sage and Haley (Jeff) Crites; and seven great-grandchildren.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Sage; son, Frank (Kimm) Sage; daughter, Victoria Sage; brother, Jack Cramer; and daughter in law, Tina Sage.
Cremation has taken place. Per Joyce’s wishes, there will be no public services at this time. She will be laid to rest next to Charles at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw.
