Obituary: James Cole Cannon Sr.

James Cole Cannon Sr., known to many simply as Jim, lived a life defined by love, hard work, humor, and the unwavering support of his wife, Geraldine, who stood by his side for 62 remarkable years. Together, they were a dynamic duo. Whether fixing up rental properties, building their family home and cabin, or launching his excavation business, Geraldine was always there, inspiring and supporting Jim’s dreams. They weren’t just partners in life; they were equals, pushing each other to reach new heights, always with a project in hand, an idea brewing, and a shared sense of adventure. A man of endless curiosity, Jim never stopped learning. After raising his family and achieving so much in life, he returned to school to earn his GED, a testament to his belief that it’s never too late to accomplish what you set your mind to. Jim was a worker in the truest sense of the word. He began his career at the Plainwell Paper Mill, later taking on the road as a semi-truck driver before embarking on the entrepreneurial journey of his own excavation business. But it wasn’t just about the work. His true passion came later in life, after what many would have considered retirement, when he became a bus driver for special needs students at Otsego Public Schools. Jim’s heart overflowed with love for these kids. Driving them wasn’t just a job—it was his favorite role. He found immense joy in their company, forming bonds that would touch his heart forever. Though Jim faced the challenges of dementia in his later years, he and his family chose to embrace the unexpected silver linings that came with it. Jim, once reserved and focused, developed a lighthearted spirit, constantly cracking jokes and lifting the moods of those around him. The disease brought out a goofy side of him that kept smiles on everyone’s faces, a reminder that even in hardship, laughter and love prevail. Jim was surrounded by an incredible team of caregivers—Carley, Jennifer, Melissa, Sunshine, Eve, Josh, and Nate—who treated him like family. They filled his days with love, care, and joy, spoiling him with home-cooked meals, special treats, and countless golf cart rides that brought him peace. His gratitude and affection for them were immeasurable, as they ensured that his final years were filled with comfort and companionship. Handiness was one of Jim’s defining traits. Known for his meticulous care of his equipment and vehicles, he could fix just about anything. If you had a problem, Jim had a solution— and usually a tool to go with it. He was also a talented woodworker, leaving behind beautifully handcrafted pieces that his family will cherish forever. If there was one thing Jim loved more than working with his hands, it was his 2015 F-250 truck. He took great pride in keeping it clean and gleaming, often taking it for rides up north to his beloved cabin in Munising—a place that always felt like home. And of course, his love for dogs was unmatched. Jim had a deep love for dogs, especially German Shepherds, and over the years, he and Geraldine shared a truly special bond with every dog they had. Their dogs were more than pets—they were constant companions, always by their side. Whether at home or out on adventures, the dogs went everywhere Jim and Geraldine did, forming a unique and visible connection with them. This unspoken bond was something anyone could see, a reflection of the love and trust Jim and Geraldine shared with each other and their four-legged friends. Jim’s life was filled with adventure, hard work, and love—qualities that defined every chapter of his journey. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, craftsmanship, and the reminder that life’s greatest joy comes from the connections we build with others. At the age of 82, Jim passed peacefully at home, surrounded by family and his dog Katie, on September 14th, 2024. Jim was born in 1942 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Donald and Jean Cannon. Jim is proceeded in death by his father, Donald Cannon, his mother, Jean Cannon (Dare), and his brothers, Dale Cannon and Dee Cannon. He is survived by his brother, Mark Cannon, Sisters, Geannie and Dawn Marie Cannon, his wife, Geraldine Cannon, his children Doreen (Bob) Anspaugh, Jim Cannon Jr., Wendy West, family friend, Matt Olieman, and his grandchildren, Palmer (Maddie) Bronkan and Taylor (Kurt) Hatten, his beloved dog, Katie, and countless family and friends whose lives he touched. In the end, Jim’s story wasn’t just about where he worked or what he built—it was about who he was. A devoted husband, a loving father, a man who never stopped challenging himself, and a soul that always found joy. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and the laughter he inspired in us all. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Friday, October 11th, from 4-7 pm at the Gun River Conservation Club, and anyone is welcome to join in remembering and honoring him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Wishbone Pet Rescue or the Alzheimer’s Association. Messages of condolence may be posted at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com.
