Richard S. Sherman, age 82 of Lake, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 23, 2024 at his home, surrounded by family. On November 16, 1941, Richard was born one of two children to Albert and Beulah (Peterman) Sherman in Detroit, MI. He was united in marriage to Merry Skelton on October 14, 1967 in Berkley, MI., and as a pair they enjoyed nearly fifty-eight years of marriage. For the first twenty-five of his working years, Richard worked as a tool & die maker at Clayton Tool—a tool and die shop that he owned and operated with his father Albert in Detroit. In the later part of his working career, Richard spent some time as a truck driver and a gas station owner-operator. In 2018 Richard and Merry retired permanently to Lake from Howell, to enjoy their private waterfront home near family where Richard spent his summer fishing and swimming and falls duck & deer hunting since he was twelve years old. In his younger years, Richard enjoyed racing drag boats on the Detroit River. He was a member of the Knights of the Road Motorcycle Club of Detroit and loved riding his Harley across the U.S. with Merry alongside.
Richard is survived by his wife Merry Sherman of Lake and his goddaughter Maura Evans of Arizona. Other survivors include his grandchildren Christine, Katie, and Austin Remsing and Summer and Nick Ackerman and his great-grandchildren Cameron and Loveina. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Beulah Sherman and his brother John Sherman.
In keeping with Richard’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private celebration of Richard’s life will take place on a date that is yet to be determined. Memorial contributions in honor of Richard may be directed to either the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to the Tunnels to Towers.
