LAWTON – Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott reported that Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office deputies and detectives are investigating a fatal house fire that occurred Friday, February 21, at approximately 7:08 a.m., in the 29000 block of Shaw Road, near Big Cedar Lake.
An alarm company notified Van Buren County Central Dispatch that a heat detector had been activated, and they were unable to make contact at the residence. The Lawton Fire De-partment responded immediately and arrived to find the residence on fire. Sheriff Abbott said the Lawton Fire Department was able to get the fire under control and prevent further destruction of property. Deputies arrived shortly after the fire department and, from previous contacts, knew that the residence was occupied by a single person who lived alone.
Upon further investigation and after the fire was under control, one person was found deceased in the residence. The cause of the fire is unknown currently.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Medical Examiner’s Office and Michigan State Police Fire Investigations Unit.
