Occupants escape as fire engulfs house

A South Haven Township residence was heavily damaged by a fire on Thursday morning.
SHAES responded at 8:45 a.m. to the property on 73rd Street near 6th Avenue.
Heavy flames were reported coming from the residence upon arrival. The flames spread to a travel trailer behind the home.
Two occupants escaped safely. They reported being awakened by an explosion. Two dogs also escaped.
SHAES was assisted by firefighters from Bangor Community FD and Covert Township FD. South Haven Police Department provided traffic control.
A water supply line had to be placed several hundred feet to the closest fire hydrant.
Firefighters were on scene more than three hours.
