Although Michigan has seen a notable surge in car break-ins over the past couple of months, very few such crimes have been reported in South Haven.
In the Metro Detroit area, police are investigating a string of coordinated nighttime car break-ins across multiple cities. And in Kent County, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office issued warnings after a sharp increase in thefts, including car break-ins.
According to South Haven’s Interim Police Chief Adam DeBoer, there have been only a couple of car break-ins reported recently.
“We had some on Saturday night last week,” DeBoer said. “But we have recovered some of the property that was stolen and have identified one of the suspects.” He said that the culprits were two local juveniles.
“I like the fact that we were able to identify the suspect and we anticipate sending charges to the juvenile court,” DeBoer said. “And none of the vehicles had damage and any vehicle that was entered had unlocked doors.”
DeBoer said that he and his officers would like to use these incidents to remind South Haven residents to take any valuables out of their vehicles and always be sure to lock your car doors.
