“Out and About” Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and sugar

I’m putting this column together on Sunday, the day before Veterans Day. I always try to have it completed earlier, but my schedule has prevented me from getting to it until now. I must finish this column by today so that I can get it to the radio station before tomorrow morning. WLKM Radio carries the column on their website and the deadline is Monday. I have a few extra days to get the column to Robert Tomlinson at the Commercial News. As a result of the two deadlines, it sometimes becomes difficult to make my input worthwhile. Anyway, I want to take this opportunity to wish my fellow veterans a patriotic Happy Veterans Day. If you are reading this in Friday, November 15’s paper, the patriotic statement is a bit late. Please know that my heart and wishes are in the right place.
This next item is about two weeks early, but it is something to remember, should you decide to start celebrating Thanksgiving a day early.
The St. Joe County Transportation Authority (SJCTA) will be offering a FREE Late Night Shuttle Service on Wednesday, November 27. This will be In-County rides, with hours of operation from 7 PM on Wednesday, the 27th until 2 AM on Thanksgiving Day. Rides may be requested to the establishment and home ONLY, or home from a party. There will be no additional party stops. No pre-booking is needed, just call for your free ride when you are ready to go home. This service will hopefully cut down on any traffic mishaps on one of the busiest party nights of the year.
To request service in Three Rivers, Constantine, Centreville, or Mendon call (269)330-6664. If you need transportation in Sturgis, Colon, Burr Oak, or White Pigeon call (269)330-8267.
If you brush your teeth, this might be interesting to you. I happen to notice that my tube of tooth paste has an expiration date. It seems that my tube expired this past July. This caused me a bit of worry, because I try to take good care of my teeth. I haven’t had a cavity for the past two years and I’m concerned that Mr. Decay might try to invade my mouth and cause some discomfort. From now on, I’ll try to be more alert when shopping for toothpaste.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I’ve already starting making a list of the many things I’m so thankful for. Near the top of the list are you readers. Every so often, someone lets me know how much they enjoyed something I had written. These words of appreciation mean a lot to me. I’ll never receive an award for outstanding journalism, but words of appreciation mean more than any award I could ever receive. Thank you Amy and anyone else who might look forward to reading my Out and About column.
I can’t remember the last time I used real sugar on anything. For coffee, I use one helping of Hazelnut Creamer and one pink or yellow packet of chemicals. The American Heart Association recommends limiting calories from added sugars – from granulated sugar, corn syrup, even honey – to no more than 100 calories per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s 150 calories per day, or about 9 teaspoons, and for most women, that’s no more than 100 calories per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. Here are five examples of sugar content in various foods:

  • Starbucks 16 ounce Peppermint Mocha = 13 tsp.
  • Cool Blue Raspberry Gatorade = 8.5 tsp
  • Chocolate Chip Clif Bar = 4 tsp
  • 2/3 cup of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia Ice Cream = 8 2/3 tsp.
  • 2./3 cup of Nature Valley French Vanilla Granola = 4 tsp
    BON APPETIT!!
    See you Out and About!
