Pat’s Bits and Pieces: All about January

After Mother Nature briefly flirted with Spring temperatures last weekend, with temperatures in the 50s for a couple of days and in the 40s at the start of the week, the snow is now all gone and the thermometer is dropping fast once again. And it’s another early deadline week for me.
Because of the Holiday, I’ve been stuck in the office pretty much of the weekend working on the annual Year in Review and winding up some other end of the year stuff. Actually, I’m glad today [Monday] is a stay-at-home-and-work-on-the-computer day, even if the sun is shining outside.
Even though it’s 43 degrees out there, I’m glad for the warm air blowing from the little heater in the room because when we went out for my monthly allergy shot and to grab a quick lunch, the breeze out there was still pretty chilly..
Now, as you read this, the holidays are over once again and we are settling in for “a long winter’s nap” (I wish).
January can be a letdown after the excitement of the Christmas season and the New Year celebration is finally over, but we do have a winter vacation to look forward to.
More about that later folks.
It has been a good holiday, despite our current lack of snow. A ‘most of the day rain’ Sunday washed the bits that were left completely away. Now we are expecting “plummeting” temperatures. (Don’t blame me for the big word, I heard it on the weather report this morning.) Anyway, if it has to be get cold out there again, I would like to see a bit of the white stuff on the ground once more – but not on the roads of course.
January arrived this week. It is the time for welcoming in another New Year with hopes that it will be better, healthier, more profitable, or more enjoyable than the last. And, predictions are that it is going to get better, or at least, I would (as the house optimist) like to think so.
The beginning of the new year, January is great for making resolutions that may last all year, or in my case maybe just a month.
January is cold blustery days and clear, still sparkling nights when the stars look close enough to touch – if you can stand to be outside…
It is sunrises when the sky is colored with pink and frosty blue. January is watching the snowflakes stream into your headlights on your way home from an evening outing, although this year, that has just been wishful thinking. We seem to prefer to stay at home these days. Old folks and snowy roads are NOT a good combination!
And if you’re thinking there’s not much going on in January, here are some of the special things about the month I discovered a few years back: January is Eye Care Month, Hot Tea Month, National Blood Donor Month, National Braille Literacy Month, National Hobby Month, National Soup Month, National Staying Healthy Month and National Thank-You Month.
If you haven’t guessed already, I “googled” January. Actually, there’s something special about every single day. Here are just a few of the highlights coming up:
January 7 is Old Rock Day – and grandson Jesse’s birthday.
January 8 is Bubble Bath Day and Elvis Presley’s Birthday (He would have been 90 this month).
January 9 is National Apricot Day and National Static Electricity Day – scrub you feet across the rug day?
January 10 is Peculiar People Day – you probably know a few of these.
January 11 is Coming-of-Age Day, Milk Day (delivered in bottles for the first time in 1878) and Secret Pal Day.
January 12 is Work Harder Day – (Sure).
January 13 is Make Your Dreams Come True Day and January 14 is National Dress Up Your Pet Day.
If all this isn’t enough, January 15 is National Nothing Day!
The 19th is Popcorn Day; Cheese Day is the 20th (It’s also Inauguration Day and Penguin Awareness Day (an interesting combination).
January 21st is Hat Day, Squirrel Appreciation Day and National Hugging Day and the 22nd sounds like it will be my favorite, National Blonde Brownie Day.
The 23rd is Measure Your Feet Day (?) and National Handwriting Day. The 24th is Compliment Day and the 25th is Opposite Day.
The 27th of January is another personal favorite, Chocolate Cake Day and of course National Kazoo Day.
Winding up the month is National Puzzle Day on the 29th and Backwards Day on the 31st.
There’s actually much more, but if we celebrate all these, the month should just about fly by and bring on my least favorite month of all – February!
Happy New Year everyone!
