Clare County Review Columns

Pat’s Bits and Pieces: You can sure tell it is October in an election year

Color showing on Harrison Avenue just south of Ludington (Old US 10).

I know I’ve written quite a lot about fall lately, but this has sure been a beautiful week. Lots of sunshine, cooler weather, low humidity and trees are beginning to show color all over the area. I believe the color in Clare County might peak in the next week or so.
I have sure enjoyed excursions to Harrison and around town with all of the sunshine making the red and yellow and orange leaves just glow.
We really need it too, since our color touring the last few times we went up to Marlene’s camper were pretty much a “bust,” at least when it comes to fall color.
So, when we were up there a couple of weeks ago, we spent our time sitting on the porch swing or mostly inside (well at least I did) with a good book and a few movies. Jack spent his time up there mostly outside, fixing things around her trailer for my sister-in-law Marlene, who he says is his “girlfriend.”
That’s not bad, especially when we add in a couple of naps, but then we need those more often these days.
Besides, it was a bit hard to sleep at night when it was raining lots of acorns all weekend long.
All night long both Friday and Saturday we listened to coyotes “singing” and what sounded like rocks hitting the trailer roof.
Sure was an interesting weekend.
Back home again, the colors are finally beginning to “pop,” so it should be colorful when we head north again.
Meantime, we have been catching up on boring stuff — updating our wills.
When I say updating, in truth I mean making new ones. Our last ones were in 1995 and lots have changed for these old folks in the past almost 30 years…
Many of our “bequests” have already been made when we downsized and moved to the much smaller new place. Since we have given so much away in the past few years, there isn’t much in the way of “family treasures” that hasn’t gone to the younger set, both in the Richardson clan and to the Maurers.
Even though we have cleared out a lot, there’s still loads to give to family or give away. After all we certainly don’t need all the “stuff” that is still filling up the garage in those uncountable bins…
So, we are now getting ready to head north again for our annual color tour of mid-Michigan.
Hopefully when we go up again, in a week or two, it will be much more colorful around Roscommon. We have had some really beautiful days here and, as I said, the colors are really starting to bloom all over the area.
I have been browsing the internet looking for tips for fall color tours.
Found the best reports, as usual, at the AAA website.
In our area the fall colors are coming on fast with peak colors expected for the next couple of weeks.
AAA says In the Northwestern Lower Peninsula, color is filling in fast. Prime viewing conditions are expected throughout the rest of the month.
In the Northeast, 90 percent color development is reported in Mackinaw City, Cheboygan, Rogers City, Roscommon (we will be checking that one out), Alpena, Gaylord and Grayling. This weekend may be the best time to view prime fall color in those areas.
Figures, doesn’t it?
In the Southwest, peak color is still a week or two away. At Holland State Park, color development is reported at 50 percent, and only 30 percent at Yankee Springs Recreation Area in Hastings.
In the Southeast, prime fall color is still a week or two away AAA reports.
Of course, those numbers change almost on a daily basis.
We will be checking the fall color process on the southern route the next time we head downstate to check in with family.
Lucky my phone takes great pictures.
