Work continued this week for the downtown Sturgis lighting project and related elements.

Placement of lights on buildings began shortly after Labor Day, with workers using two lifts, making their way along U.S. 12.

Additional features connected with the project:

• QR codes posted at public art and historical sites throughout downtown. Codes would link to the DDA website, with an interactive map to encourage exploration of sites within the district. The website design stage is progressing well, said Jeff Coney, community development specialist for the city.

• “Electric Alley,” near the rear entrance of Five Lakes Coffee. The goal is to feature seating, lighted attractions and art displays. “The alleyway will quickly follow the completion of the parking lot and alley concrete,” Coney said late last week.

• A food-truck hub, repainted with a mural, to be placed near Sturges-Young Center for the Arts. Refurbishing for that aspect is underway.

Sturgis Downtown Development Authority received approval to use a grant from Michigan Economic Development Corporation to help fund the initiative. Crowdfunding at Patronicity, tinyurl.com/yvm5k7sr, has brought more than $50,000 additional money toward the effort. Franks Fund donated more than $125,000.

The city is not required to provide financial support through its budget.
