Ethan Reeves broke the longest standing Clare track and field school record with a pole vault of 14’6.75 which had been held by Don Teall for 51 years.
This day was like many other days where Don has shown up through the years to watch many of Clare’s vaulters try to dethrone him. When Ethan cleared 14’3 and the new school record bar was raised Don made his way to the infield to watch . Ethan cleared 14’6.75 on his first attempt and both record holders, old and new shook hands on the runway to celebrate!
Ethan has attended many vaulting competitions like the Grand Haven beach vault, summer series at Landon Athletics, indoor track where he was able to compete at CMU and SVSU, Adidas track nationals in Virginia Beach where he took runner up in his division with 13’11.25. Ethan took first place at regionals(13’8) and second place at mid-Michigan meet of champs and second for all conference (13’9).
He will compete this weekend in Hamilton at the state meet. Ethan has been a part of the track team since 5th grade and contributes a lot of his success to his main coach Burhans who has always believed in him and allowed him to try multiple events.
Coach Burhans was recently inducted into the MITCA hall of fame. Ethan said his pole vault coach Tj Staley is also a major influence who has helped get him to where he is at. Tj has put many hours in with Ethan teaching and believing in him and they have traveled all over Michigan together to compete and out of state where Ethan competed in Virginia Beach. Ethan’s training with Kris Nash, One Rep Above, has helped him in all aspects of every sport he has been a part of. Ethan plans attending Siena Heights University in the fall where he will continue pole vault on the men’s track and field team .
