The city of Sturgis recently reiterated its snow removal policy.
Snowfall of 1-3 inches will be addressed with de-icing and plowing as necessary. In some cases, it may involve plowing of intersections, major streets and local roads.
Snowfall of 4 inches or more is categorized as a “snow-removal emergency.” That condition can be declared by the city using various media outlets, including the municipal website.
During a snow-removal emergency, on-street parking is prohibited on all streets. The parking prohibition remains in effect until a street has been cleared of snow between two successive street intersections. An emergency may be canceled with an announcement through similar channels.
During any snowfall, residents are required by ordinance to keep their sidewalks clear of snow, ice or other “nuisances” for a period of more than 24 consecutive hours.
The police department especially will monitor sidewalks that are used as routes for students who walk to and from school.
For drivers, at times when the city’s snow removal equipment is in use, don’t follow too closely behind, officials said, to prevent possible accidents.
During heavy snowfall, residents are urged to stay off roads unless travel is essential, to allow plow crews to clear streets as quickly as possible.
