The Holland Michigan Kennel Club and President Kim Caines presented Sheriff Baker with a check for $13,500 last week during a gathering at the Sheriff’s office. This large donation was for the purchase of a new police K9. This will allow for the retirement of K9 Lajki who has served since 2017. Lajki was purchased with a donation in the spring of 2017 from the Holland Kennel Club. The Holland Kennel Club also purchased long retired K9 Lucky in the fall of 2010.
The Holland Kennel club has been a great partner of the Sheriff’s office over the years and has helped bring our K9 program to the next level.
The Holland Kennel Club and the Gun Lake Tribe are our two major sponsor of the K9 program. Their partnerships have made it possible for the Sheriff’s office to purchase our K9 deputies and the specialized equipment needed. They also help provide the training that makes our community, deputies, and K9 deputies safer every day. These two organizations make everything possible for us and we again thank all members for the continued support.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office has (4) K9 deputies which allows for a K9 on each of our 12 hour shifts. Our K9’s respond to various calls for service. The K9’s are trained in tracking and drug detection. Most would think that drug detection is the skill we rely on most, but tracking is what our K9 handlers pride themselves on. K9’s are able to track suspects as well as assist with missing persons cases. When a K9 handler is able to locate a missing person or lost child with the assistance of their K9, it is one of the most rewarding moments.
