South Haven’s National Blueberry Festival begins this week

The National Blueberry Festival has been a beloved tradition in the community since 1963. Taking place annually on the second weekend of August, it holds the distinction of being one of the nation’s longest-running fruit festivals. This festival is not only popular locally but also attracts visitors from across the country who come to celebrate the deliciousness of blueberries.
South Haven, renowned for its abundant blueberry farms, transforms into a lively center of activity during the festival. The air is filled with the delightful scent of blueberries as the town hosts a wide array of events aimed at entertaining and engaging individuals of all ages. From complimentary concerts and parades to pie-eating contests and pancake breakfasts, the festival offers enjoyment for the entire family.
On August 8th, the Vertical Edge Carnival Rides will open at noon, offering a variety of rides for both adults and children. The day wraps up with the Youth Pageant from 5:30-6:30 pm, followed by the Blueberry Pie Social.
August 9th features the AAUW Book Sale at First Congregational Church from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and the Blueberry Central Market on Huron Street Pavilion from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. The carnival runs from 12:00 pm – 10:00 pm, and don’t miss the Bark-B-Que at Huron Street Pavilion from 4:00 pm until Sold Out.
On August 10th, get ready for the festival’s highlight, the parade from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm, showcasing the community’s spirit and pride. Following the parade, enjoy the delicious blueberry pancake breakfasts topped with fresh blueberries and syrup.
For the little ones, the festival offers a variety of kids’ activities, including a fun zone with rides and games that provide endless entertainment. The beer and beverage tent provides a spot for adults to relax and enjoy local brews. The pie-eating contests are a highlight for many.
Art and music enthusiasts can revel in the talent on display, with street musicians and headline performances creating a musical backdrop to the festivities. The craft fair at Stanley Johnston Park is a treasure trove for those seeking unique, handcrafted items, while the local blueberry farms open their gates for u-pick experiences, allowing visitors to harvest their own berries.
The festival also honors the importance of agriculture to the region, with Farm Day inviting families to explore and learn about the farming process. The Blueberry Central Market becomes a bustling marketplace where vendors offer everything from blueberry jams and preserves to artisanal crafts.
The National Blueberry Festival is more than just a celebration of blueberries; it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and the joys of summer.
