South Haven Rotarians joined fourth and fifth graders from North Shore elementary school in planting salmon fingerlings in the Black River on Wednesday, May 7.
The planting was the culmination of an annual project. The life of the fish started as spawned eggs which hatched into immotile larvae and eventually fingerlings large enough for planting.
The project is accomplished using chillers donated by South Haven Rotary and the South Haven Steelheaders.
Students placed the fingerlings into the river one-by-one, assisted by Rotarians. Hopefully in years to come they’ll grow into 20-pound-plus salmon that ply the Lake Michigan waters.
