Sturgis bowling get wins over Vicksburg; compete in Mason, Zeeland invites

PORTAGE — The Sturgis bowling teams hit the road to face Vicksburg at Airway Lanes in Portage Monday, and returned home with two wins. The boys prevailed 17-13, and the girls came up big, winning 29-1.
Boys singles results: 812-709 (8-1), 865-776 (7-2), 1677-1485 (2-0), won 17-3. Bakers event: 146-154 (0-4), 165-173 (0-4), 311-327 (0-2), lost 10-0. The match play final score was 17-13. Individual scores for the boys: Andrew Matz 226-232 (458), Noah Walker 146-137 (283), Malachi Monty 136-145 (281), Brayden Smoker split-189 (189), Josh Groff 172-split (172), Austin Crites split-split (split), split 132-162 (294).
Girls singles results: 567-259 (8-1), 519-244 (9-0), 1086-503 (2-0), won 19-1. Bakers event results: 118-44 (4-0), 109-56 (4-0), 227-100 (2-0), won 10-0. Individual scores for the girls:Khara Kimes 224 (career high)-150 (374), Mackenzie Myers 128-128 (256, career high series), Beth Waugh 95-120 (215), Blair Brinneman 62-62 (124), Allison Waugh 58-59 (117, career high series).
“It was a solid outing by both squads,” coach Scott Spahr said. “Each day sees progress, and we saw very good performances out of Allison and Mackenzie.” He also added that “A new career high for Khara and the second consecutive 450-plus in three matches for Andrew, who now carries a 216 average in Wolverine Conference play.”
City Limits Bowl in Mason was the site of the Mason Capital Area College Prep Tournament, where both the Sturgis boys and girls bowling teams participated Sunday. The boys placed eighth, while the girls finished in ninth place.
In boys’ singles, the Trojans rolled to scores of 760-757-804 for a total of 2321. In the Bakers event, Sturgis totaled 1821, for a combined score of 4142. Individually, the boy’s scores were as follows: Brayden Smoker 526, good for 12th place, Andrew Matz 489, placing him 21st, followed by Malachi Monty, who rolled 445 (29th place). Noah Walker 402, good for 35th place, and Josh Groff, who had 327 (43rd). Brian Becerril-Nieves finished split-split, split-132, split.
In girls’ singles, the Lady Trojans scored 562-604-523 for a total of 1689. The 604 was a season high. In the Bakers, the girls had a pin total of 1328, for a combined total of 3017. Individual scores are as follows: Khara Kimes 492 (6th place), Mackenzie Myers 384 (25th, career-high series), Elliana McNett 321 (34th), Beth Waugh 291 (37th), Allison Waugh 106 (48th), and Blair Brinneman 95.
The Sturgis bowling teams took part in the Zeeland Baker Invite Saturday, with the boys finishing 16th, while the girls rolled to a 13th place showing. The boys finished with a total  score of 1419, while the Lady Trojans ended with a score of 1261, including a 172 game, which is a season-high. In match play, the boys faced #2 seed Zeeland. Sturgis had games of 123-154 (277), while Zeeland rolled 173-195 (368). The Sturgis girls squared off against #11 seed Muskegon Reeths-Puffer. The Trojans had games of 124-104 (228), while their opponent scored 136-139 (275).
 “It was a day of discovering that more work is needed in the spare game for the boys. Keyword: consistency,” stated Scott Spahr, Sturgis coach. “The girls, as they gain experience, will be working on confidence in their game.”
The girls now sit at 3-3 overall, and 3-2 in conference play. The boys are now 5-1 overall, and 5-0 in the Wolverine.
